30 Jun: Care for Kensington grant applications close

We think Kensington is the best place to live and we hope you do too. Two Care for Kensington (CfK) community grants are available to be spent during 2024 on any project that benefits our fabulous suburb! Think environmental, cultural, artistic, social, even virtual…

Previous winners include Jerry and Sarah O’Connell (2021 adult grant) with their Rock of the Fairy project in Bridge Street, Kensington, and Sarah and Ethan (2023 children grant) with their Jump for Joy project in Regent Garden, Kensington, adjacent to McKellar Stewart kindy (pictured below with KRA Secretary/Photographer Andrew Dyson).

Grants offered

Adults (18 and over): a grant of up to $750 is available.

Children (under 18): a grant of up to $250 is available.

Eligibility

Anyone living in Kensington or on its perimeter roads who is a member of the KRA (or living in a KRA member’s household) is welcome to submit an application.  Non-KRA members may join on payment of $15 annual fee. Committee members of the KRA are not eligible to apply for CfK grant funding.

Projects with a clear benefit to our community (not just benefitting a few individuals) will be viewed favourably.

Grant funds must be used for project expenses. Hours worked by grant recipients is not a valid expense.

3 Mar: Clean Up Australia Day

Let’s clean up Kensington!!

The Kensington Residents’ Association has arranged local Clean Up Australia Day events for more than twenty years.

Clean Up Australia Day started with a few people motivated to clean up their local areas (Lake Macquarie 1987, Sydney Harbour 1989) inspiring other people to join in. It’s become a huge national event that builds community and improves our environment. Get involved this year!

Meet at Borthwick Park on Sunday 3rd March at 10am. Each volunteer (or group of volunteers) is allocated a section of Kensington to clean up.

Rubbish bags and gloves are provided for volunteers’ use. Wear suitable shoes for comfortable walking, as well as a hat/sunscreen.

All collected rubbish is to be returned to Borthwick Park where morning tea/ brunch is provided for the volunteers.

Waterers wanted!

To give the 2024 mid-year plantings in Borthwick Park a better chance of surviving the summer heat, could you consider joining our summer watering roster?

You will only need to water for a couple of hours once or twice over summer (December-March) at a time that suits you.

If you haven’t watered before we can show you how to use our equipment and where to find water connection points in the park.

If you’d like to help, please email our Secretary at contact@kra.org.au, advising any dates you will be unavailable.

Once the roster’s firmed up we’ll be in touch advising your assigned watering time and checking if you have any queries or concerns.

19 Dec: Carolling in Kensington

Join our annual tradition of community carolling through Kensington this December.

Meet at Regent Park opposite the Kensi Hotel for a 7pm start on Tuesday 19th December.

Led by bagpipers, we make our way down Thornton St pausing to sing at the Lithuanian community units, then turn right into High St to sing with the Sisters of St Joseph at the Bethany Centre in the Mary MacKillop Precinct. We then head southeast along High St, down Richmond St and though Borthwick Park to the Thornton St entrance of the Norwood Aged Cottage Homes. We walk through the NACH property to Bridge Street and walk up to finish with a carol inside the Rising Sun Inn at approximately 8.30pm. We stop frequently along this route to sing a couple of carols and spread Christmas cheer through our suburb.

Check the proposed route below. Side-tracks and minor route variations are possible, so if you would like the Kensington carollers to sing outside your home please get in touch with our Secretary (contact@kra.org.au) and we’ll do our best to make it happen!

Song sheets are provided by KRA. Dress with some Christmassy flair (tinsel, Santa hats, Christmas tshirts, reindeer antlers) and wear comfortable walking shoes.
